Must-see destinations in Karwar


We list some of the top must-see destinations in Karwar. For the uniniatiated, the city is well-known for its muslin and has some beautiful sacred temples famed for its architecture.

Devbagh Beach: Counted amongst the 'must see' in the vicinity of Karwar, is located at a distance of around 4 km from the Karwar Beach. In order to reach this beach, travellers can take ferry from the Karwar to the island of Devbagh. This site is renowned among tourists for its jungle lodges resort. Unlike other beaches, Devbagh beach is unspoilt and untouched by pollution. It is an ideal spot for thrill-seekers, family holidayers and honeymooners. There are plenty of water sports activities to keep you engaged. Tourists can indulge in scuba-diving, parasailing, banana boat rides, boat cruises and snorkelling. Boat rides and trawlers are available for those who wish to explore the islands and nearby fishing villages. If trekking is what you fancy, a trip to the nearby hills of Kurumgad Island will surely enthrall you. Once you are in Devbagh, don't miss the majestic Sadashivgad Fort, Venkataramana Temple and Naganatha Temple that are situated in proximity of the site.

Karwar Beach, Karwar: One of the most popular beaches in Karnataka, Karwar beach is fringed by the Arabian Sea from west and Western Ghats from east. Tourists can enjoy sun bathing, swimming, fishing and water sports activities at Karwar Beach. The beach also caters to your food buds, taste local delicacies at food stalls located here. People planning a trip to Karwar can visit the beach at any time of the year, though the period between September and May is the best time to visit this site. Maruti Temple, Karwar: The renowned Maruti temple is situated 8 km away from the town of Karwar and is known for ist Rangoli art gallery that attracts people by the droves. Numerous pilgrims visit this temple to offer prayers to Lord Ganapati. It is best known among tourists for its 'Rangoli Festival' that is influenced by rangoli art. At the time of this festival, people decorate roads surrounding the Maruti Temple with colourful patterns. Rangoli designs at Maruti Temple usually include gods and goddesses, sport personalities, famous actors and politicians, to name a few.

Anshi National Park, Karwar: The Anshi National Park is 60 km away from Karwar in Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka. This national park is spread over an area of 340 sq. km and lies at an elevation of 200 meter to 925 meter above sea level. Located in the eco-sensitive area of Western Ghats, Anshi National Park was created when a part of the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary was demarcated to create a national park. In January 2007, Anshi National Park was given the status of a sanctuary for Project Tiger. The best time to visit this site is between the months of November and June. It is home to a vast number of species of animals, reptiles, birds and fauna.
